Federal Reserve’s 25-Basis-Point Rate Hike Sends Wall Street Lower on Wednesday

    September 17, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The Federal Reserve announced a 25 basis point increase in its benchmark interest rate during its September policy meeting, prompting a decline in U.S. stocks. The rate hike pushed the federal funds target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. As a result, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 631.21 points, or 1.21%, closing at 51,461.90. The S&P 500 decreased by 34.55 points, or 0.46%, to 7,551.81. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite ended 3.16 points lower at 25,978.42.

This rate increase was unanimously approved by the Federal Reserve’s 12-0 vote at its September meeting. It marked the first hike since July 2023. Officials indicated that economic activity remains robust, with domestic spending demonstrating resilience, and productivity growth alongside capital investment staying strong. The central bank also noted that employment gains continued to match labor force growth and that unemployment showed little change.

Inflation persisted above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target as officials evaluated economic conditions during the September 15-16 gathering. The increase in rates followed a period of stable borrowing costs after earlier reductions. This marked a shift from the monetary policy stance that had been in place for more than three years. Throughout the session, U.S. stocks moved downward into the close, and Treasury yields increased across various maturities. Shares of smaller companies also declined during trading.

Federal Reserve’s projections indicate elevated policy rate for 2026

Economic forecasts released by the Fed now project a median federal funds rate of 4.1% for the end of 2026, up from the 3.8% median estimate given in June. The projections also show median estimates of 4.1% for 2027 and 3.9% for 2028. These estimates reflect individual officials’ views on appropriate policy conditions but do not determine future interest rate decisions, which are reviewed at scheduled Federal Reserve meetings.

Additionally, the officials raised their median forecast for real U.S. gross domestic product growth to 2.3% for 2026, compared to the June estimate of 2.2%. The unemployment rate outlook improved, dropping to 4.1% from 4.3%. The median forecast for headline personal consumption expenditures inflation stood at 3.7% this year, while core PCE inflation, excluding food and energy, was forecasted at 3.4%.

Yields on Treasuries climb as major stock indices retreat

Following the rate decision and the updated economic projections, Treasury yields increased. The two-year Treasury yield approached 4.73%, and the benchmark 10-year yield rose to approximately 5.00%. The Russell 2000, representing smaller U.S. companies, fell about 0.4%, reaching 2,858.81. Across major U.S. exchanges, declining stocks outnumbered advancing issues, as markets adjusted to the latest data on rates, inflation, and economic growth.

Despite Wednesday’s decline, the major U.S. stock indexes still hold gains for 2026. The S&P 500 remains roughly 10.3% higher for the year, the Dow has gained about 7.1%, and the Nasdaq has increased approximately 11.8%. Today’s trading renewed focus on U.S. interest rates, inflation figures, and Treasury yields, with the Federal Reserve set to continue assessing incoming economic data at upcoming policy meetings.
