U.S. Travel Advisory Highlights Crime and Terrorism Risks in Belgium at Level 2

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for Belgium, now emphasizing concerns related to crime and unrest alongside ongoing terrorism threats. The July 23 revision maintains Belgium at Level 2, urging Americans to exercise increased caution. While terrorism remains part of the guidance, travelers are not advised to cancel or avoid trips altogether. Instead, the advisory offers security advice and practical tips for those visiting Brussels and other Belgian locations.

US travel advisory flags crime terrorism in Belgium
Updated guidance highlights crime, terrorism and unrest risks for Belgium visitors.

The notice warns that pickpockets and purse snatchers frequently target busy tourist hotspots. Extra vigilance is recommended in transportation hubs such as railway stations, airports, restaurants, buses, trams, and metro systems. Authorities also report incidents of phone theft, property stolen from vehicles, and purse snatching. It is advised that travelers keep passports, cash, and electronic devices secured while navigating crowded spaces. The State Department emphasizes that valuables should be kept out of sight and bags should not be left unattended, even briefly.

Specific risks associated with train travel include luggage stored on overhead racks or near doors. The guidance highlights an increase in thefts on routes connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Thieves may stage distractions or act in groups to steal wallets, phones, and small travel bags. Belgian Federal Police recommend that travelers remain vigilant about their belongings throughout their journey. Passengers should supervise their luggage especially during station stops, boarding, and transfers between trains in crowded settings.

Theft risks predominantly concern transportation networks

The terrorism section addresses threats at public events, hotels, restaurants, shopping districts, educational institutions, and religious sites. The warning also extends to parks, transit systems, and other densely populated areas. Belgium’s national threat level stands at Level 3 out of four, which is characterized as serious by the country’s threat assessment authority. This level indicates a possible and likely terrorism or extremism threat. Visitors are urged to stay alert and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.

Demonstrations and strikes can disrupt travel within Belgium, causing delays on roads, disruptions to rail services, and interruptions in urban transportation. Authorities may close streets or restrict access near protest sites. The advisory recommends that Americans avoid participating in demonstrations and stay informed through local sources before traveling through affected areas. It also advises checking train, bus, and metro schedules during strikes or major public events. Such precautions are advised in Brussels and other large urban centers.

Preparation and safety measures are vital for secure travel

The State Department suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, which facilitates communication and provides security alerts. The program enables the U.S. Embassy in Brussels to contact citizens during emergencies. Travelers are advised to review entry requirements, abide by local laws, and follow health guidelines before departure. It is also recommended to carry copies of passports and essential documents. Sharing travel plans with trusted contacts can assist family members and authorities in case of an emergency.

Belgium’s emergency numbers include 112 for police, fire, and medical assistance, while 101 can be dialed for local police services. The advisory also warns travelers to exercise caution around banks, ticket machines, and ATMs, where thieves may observe distracted visitors. Keeping informed through official channels and maintaining emergency contact information is essential during the stay. Currently, Belgium remains at Level 2, with the primary concerns centered around crime, terrorism, and civil unrest, as highlighted in the latest update.
