OpenAI Eliminates ChatGPT Free and Go Text Chat Limits for GPT-5.6 Luna Next Week

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is enhancing access to ChatGPT for Free and Go plan users by removing restrictions on text conversations under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text interactions will be available starting next week, while safeguards against misuse will remain in place. During this rollout, Luna is also becoming the default model for these plans. Concurrently, Free users will receive a new Think button, allowing the model extra time to analyze complex questions before responding.

This increased allowance applies to regular text exchanges but does not extend to all features within ChatGPT. Limits will still be enforced for image creation, file uploads, and other tools that demand additional computational resources. OpenAI stated that the Think button will be introduced alongside unlimited text access next week. Users can enable it when a question requires more in-depth reasoning. This update broadens the core conversational capabilities for Free and Go accounts, while maintaining separate restrictions on other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 comprises several models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed for different performance needs. Luna is the faster and more affordable option within this lineup. OpenAI reported that approximately one billion individuals now use ChatGPT weekly for tasks such as research, planning, writing, and searching. The latest update positions Luna as the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users, with other GPT-5.6 variants still accessible through different products and plans tailored to various workloads and access levels.

Broader free access while tool restrictions stay in place

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro are now receiving an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, optimized for both regular and advanced reasoning tasks. The company highlighted that Sol offers more targeted responses and minimizes unnecessary detail when shorter replies suffice. Paid members also gain a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop versions. This feature allows users to control how much processing power the model applies to each request, useful for research, coding, writing, planning, and other tasks requiring different levels of logical processing.

OpenAI shared results from internal testing on the factual accuracy of its latest models. These assessments involved financial, medical, and legal questions demanding detailed factual answers. The company reported a roughly 62% reduction in responses containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. Similarly, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated a decrease of about 68% under the same testing conditions. OpenAI also noted improved accuracy in handling dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when such details influenced the final reply.

Enhanced protections for younger users included in new models

Safeguards have been added to the GPT-5.6 models specifically for users believed to be under 18. These measures restrict content related to romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could promote replacing real-world relationships. Additional boundaries are set for sexual material, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI mentioned implementing extra evaluations for responses involving minors. The same abuse safeguards will stay active when unlimited text conversations are enabled for Free and Go accounts with the expanded ChatGPT access.

This rollout applies to the main ChatGPT platform but does not impact every product utilizing GPT-5.6. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged by this update. Currently, Plus and Pro users can access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls, while Free and Go users will have Luna as their default model this week. The unlimited text conversations and Think button are scheduled to launch next week, with separate limits still in place for image creation, uploads, and other resource-heavy tools.
