MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict the range of Gemini models accessible to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will be limited to Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. Access to Flash or Pro will be discontinued under the new policy. Google outlined these updates in revised support documentation for its consumer AI offerings. The new rules apply specifically to individual Google accounts and do not affect accounts managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers with Google AI Plus subscriptions will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash following the implementation of these changes. Nonetheless, their subscription will no longer include access to Pro. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users; instead, affected customers will receive an email indicating when their access will be modified. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to enjoy access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed as an efficient Gemini model, Flash-Lite offers rapid responses for common daily tasks. Flash adds extra capabilities while maintaining swift reply times across a variety of requests. Pro is geared toward more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google states that the model can handle text, files, images, and videos while engaging in deeper reasoning. Responses generated by Pro may require more processing time compared to other Gemini models.
Wider model access remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is also rolling out effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high within models available to users on different plans. Higher effort settings enable models to allocate more resources for producing comprehensive responses, which also results in increased usage consumption for that account. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will gain access to Deep Think, a feature designed for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that applies maximum parallel reasoning to handle challenging requests.
These new restrictions follow prior adjustments to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google implemented compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly caps are reached. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Advanced features and premium models tend to deplete these allowances more quickly than basic requests. On July 24, Google extended the earlier usage-limit updates to users under 18.
Distinct usage limits are set for different Google AI subscriptions
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the platform’s standard usage allowances. AI Plus users benefit from double the standard quota, whereas AI Pro members receive four times that amount. AI Ultra subscribers have either five times or twenty times the AI Pro allowance, depending on their plan. Tools such as Deep Research, media creation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can draw on larger portions of these limits. Paid subscriptions thus offer both increased usage capacity and broader model access.
The October updates apply specifically to Gemini Apps accessed via personal Google accounts and do not impact all Google AI services. Accounts used for work or school are governed by separate access policies, and developer services have their own rules. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as these access modifications are implemented.
