U.S. Diesel Price Hits $5.88, Setting New Record Amid Energy Market Strains

    September 7, 2026

UNITED STATES / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. Energy Information Administration announced that on September 5, the national average for diesel reached a historic high of $5.8819 per gallon, marking a significant increase across the country. One year earlier, the average was $3.7123 a gallon. Meanwhile, regular gasoline averaged $4.1459, up from $3.2046 during the same period last year. Diesel prices have now surpassed the previous peak set in June 2022. This surge has pushed fuel costs to the highest levels on record for truckers, farmers, and other key users of diesel fuel.

Record U.S. diesel price reaches $5.88 amid fuel squeeze
U.S. diesel costs have climbed sharply as crude oil and refined fuel markets tighten.

This recent price spike followed a national diesel average of $5.85 a gallon on September 4, which had already exceeded the previous peak before prices climbed again the next day. Currently, diesel costs more than $2.16 a gallon above its level from a year ago. While regular gasoline prices have also increased, their national average remains below the peak reached in 2022. The rise in crude oil prices and tighter supplies of refined fuels have been primary drivers of the recent increases across U.S. energy markets.

AAA recorded the national diesel average on September 5 at $5.8819, surpassing the previous record of $5.816 set on June 19, 2022. California continues to have the highest diesel prices among major markets, with an average close to $7.81 a gallon. In the state, regular gasoline is nearly $5.85. Regional differences in pump prices persist due to variations in taxes, refinery access, fuel standards, and transportation costs. These factors contribute to notable disparities between coastal markets, inland states, and key fuel-producing regions.

Global Fuel Supply Tightening Drives Diesel Prices Higher

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the weekly on-highway diesel average for the week ending August 31 was $5.599 per gallon. Its upcoming update is scheduled for September 9, due to the Labor Day holiday. Wholesale diesel prices continue to stay high at key U.S. trading hubs. Refiners face increased crude costs, while international supply disruptions restrict fuel flows. These conditions have kept diesel markets tight, even as domestic refiners operate at high capacity utilization.

Oil prices also surged on September 7, influenced by geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran disrupting shipping in the Gulf. Brent crude prices rose above $97 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate moved over $92. Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained below recent averages, affecting a key route that transports significant amounts of crude oil and refined products from Gulf producers. Attacks on Russian refineries have also contributed to reduced processing capacity and a tightening of global supplies for diesel and other refined fuels.

High Fuel Prices Impact Freight and Agriculture Sectors

Diesel is a critical fuel for much of the U.S. freight network and remains vital for several large industries. Long-haul trucks rely on diesel to transport goods between ports, warehouses, factories, and retail outlets. Farmers depend on it for tractors, harvesters, and other heavy machinery. Additionally, construction equipment, commercial fleets, and some rail operations consume large quantities of diesel. The recent price increase has consequently raised operating costs across transportation, agriculture, and construction sectors. Given diesel’s extensive industrial role, its price movements have broader economic implications beyond passenger fuel alone.

Despite U.S. crude production remaining near historic highs, diesel prices are influenced by multiple stages within the fuel supply chain. Factors such as refining capacity, inventories, shipping routes, and international product flows all impact the final retail price. Global refinery disruptions have led to reduced supplies, while seasonal demand from freight and agriculture remains robust. As of September 5, the national diesel average was roughly 58% higher than its level from a year earlier. This rapid increase underscores diesel’s position as one of the fastest rising major transportation fuels in the United States.
