85% Containment Achieved by Nevada Firefighters as 47 Homes Are Destroyed

RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – Firefighters from Washoe County have raised containment of the Hawk Fire to 85% after 47 homes and one commercial building were lost. The wildfire, which expanded rapidly through dry terrain northwest of Reno, burned an area of 15,067 acres by late Tuesday. During the incident, eight additional homes sustained serious damage. Seven individuals, including firefighters, were injured, but officials confirmed there were no fatalities. This updated property damage tally follows a thorough assessment of neighborhoods affected since the fire started on Saturday.

Washoe County teams surveyed the impacted zones and documented the latest destruction across nearby communities. Most of the destruction occurred west of U.S. Highway 395, where the fire moved through populated regions during its early stages. Search teams checked the affected properties and found no evidence of additional victims. Officials noted the fire traveled about six miles within its first 24 hours. The rapid spread prompted evacuation orders across neighborhoods north and northwest of Reno.

On Tuesday, approximately 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 were permitted to return home as fire conditions improved. Around 5,000 others remained under evacuation orders during an afternoon briefing. Authorities eased restrictions in several areas as firefighting crews secured more of the fire perimeter. Some roads reopened following closures that had disrupted travel around northern Reno. Returning residents encountered damaged utilities, burned properties, and areas still under firefighter patrols and safety checks.

    Containment Progress and Resident Repatriation

The Hawk Fire remained at 15,067 acres as firefighters increased containment around its edges. Officials reported that late Tuesday, 586 personnel were assigned to the incident, a reduction from earlier, larger deployments. Crews continued to search for hot spots and reinforce containment lines around burned neighborhoods. The response involved engines, aircraft, and firefighting teams from multiple U.S. states, with personnel from Australia and New Zealand also participating as crews worked across the northern Nevada fire zone.

While investigators have determined that the Hawk Fire was human-caused, authorities have not disclosed whether the ignition was accidental or deliberate. The fire began Saturday near the Somersett area and spread swiftly through dry vegetation. Strong winds pushed the flames toward communities in northwest Reno during its initial spread. As conditions improved and containment lines expanded, firefighters gained better control. Further details about the fire’s precise origin have not been released by officials.

Ongoing Emergency Efforts Across Affected Areas

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend, coinciding with the expansion of evacuation zones. The declaration mobilized state resources to support local firefighting, public safety, and recovery efforts. Emergency agencies coordinated assistance for residents who evacuated and for crews managing damaged neighborhoods. The emergency status is set to remain in effect through August 29 unless earlier termination is ordered. State and local teams continue to manage evacuation updates and access to the affected communities.

The wildfire also caused damage to power infrastructure, including roughly 100 wooden utility poles along its path. Utility crews worked to restore power as more residents returned to areas that were reopened. Firefighters remained on patrol Tuesday, inspecting damaged properties and monitoring conditions near containment lines. Authorities continued to adjust evacuation zones as access improved. The confirmed toll includes 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged, and one commercial building lost, with containment holding steady at 85%.
