Dow Jones Declines as Oil Surges Past $100 and Bond Yields Climb

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The New York Stock Exchange extended its downward trend on Wednesday following a sharp drop that saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average fall by 628 points on Tuesday. The index declined another 0.77%, closing at 52,381.02, while the S&P 500 decreased by 0.48%. The Nasdaq Composite experienced a 0.64% drop as selling pressures affected most of the major market sectors. Elevated oil prices and rising Treasury yields continued to be key influences on trading activity during both sessions.

Dow falls again as oil tops $100 and bond yields rise
The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined as oil prices moved above $100 a barrel.

Tuesday’s downturn resulted in the Dow decreasing by 628.18 points, or 1.18%, to finish at 52,786.07. The S&P 500 dropped 45.08 points, or 0.58%, ending at 7,673.52. The Nasdaq Composite fell by 85.58 points, or 0.32%, to close at 26,421.41. Smaller-cap stocks also faced declines, with the Russell 2000 falling 15.44 points, or 0.52%, to 2,960.20 as U.S. markets resumed trading after a long weekend.

Oil prices surged amid disruptions affecting energy flows from the Middle East, adding pressure to global markets. Brent crude approached $99.50 a barrel Tuesday before settling at $97.92. Prices continued to rise on Wednesday, with Brent closing at $101.21 and West Texas Intermediate ending at $96.05. These gains reignited focus on energy costs as investors prepared for upcoming U.S. inflation data and monitored the influence of higher commodity prices.

Rising oil prices exert pressure across financial markets

Wednesday’s selling extended across nearly all major sectors of the S&P 500, although energy shares gained ground. The energy sector rose approximately 1.1%, making it the only primary sector to finish in positive territory. After unveiling its newest smartphone lineup, Apple slipped around 0.3%. Meanwhile, Meta Platforms surged over 6% following the launch of new artificial intelligence features, although the number of declining stocks in the S&P 500 still outnumbered advancers by more than four to one.

Bond markets also reflected tighter financial conditions as Treasury yields increased during Wednesday’s trading session. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached its highest point since November 2023. The U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to buy up to $6 billion of government bonds maturing in 10 to 20 years. Rising Treasury yields tend to intensify competition for investor funds, as government securities offer relatively lower risk and steady income compared to stocks.

Focus shifts to upcoming inflation reports

Investors are also preparing for two critical U.S. inflation reports scheduled ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting on September 15 to 16. Producer price data for August will be released Thursday, followed by consumer price figures on Friday. Market expectations suggest about a 60% probability of a rate hike during the Federal Reserve’s upcoming gathering. The Fed continues to monitor inflation and overall economic conditions while maintaining its emphasis on price stability.

Despite the two-day decline, the main U.S. stock indexes stayed higher for 2026. The S&P 500 remained roughly 12% up for the year after Wednesday’s close and was near its August peak. The Nasdaq Composite held an approximate 13% gain, and the Dow was still about 9% higher. Trading volume on Wednesday reached approximately 14.7 billion shares, slightly below the recent 20-session average of around 14.9 billion shares.
